Cameron Fens Fills Out UNC Basketball Roster, Football Position Battles Heat Up

UNC’s frontcourt search is over. Cameron Fens, a 7-foot, 255-pound transfer center from South Dakota, committed to Michael Malone on Friday, becoming UNC’s sixth transfer portal addition of the offseason and filling the Tar Heels’ last open roster spot.

The recruitment was facilitated by Carolina associate head coach Chuck Martin, who had a pre-existing relationship with Fens’ agent, making it one of Malone’s quicker portal additions this cycle.

Fens earned First Team All-Summit League and Summit League All-Defensive honors last season, averaging 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks — and ranked in the 99th percentile nationally for time spent in the post.

He was among the class of 2022 players excluded from the NCAA’s new age-based eligibility model; a Davidson County, Tennessee judge granted him a temporary injunction in his own lawsuit against the NCAA, clearing the way for a fifth season. Fens slots in as a physical, rim-protecting, low-post presence alongside Jarin Stevenson, Alexandros Samodurov, and Sayon Keita — a different style than UNC’s more perimeter-oriented bigs.

It caps off a search that also included contact with Florida’s Micah Handlogten and Villanova transfer Duke Brennan, with Fens ultimately winning out.
