Meet Caleb Wilson, Anthony Thompson Sets Commitment Date, Basketball Practice Sneak Peek
Plus: Caleb Hood retires, Drake Maye keeps rolling, football recruit rundown, Field Hockey dominates
There was no football game over the weekend, but it was still a busy time for UNC Athletics. Caleb Wilson introduced himself, 5-star wing Anthony Thompson set a commitment date, Carolina Basketball held an open practice, football commits and NFL players posted big numbers, and a former Carolina Wrestler “paid it forward” with a huge donation to the program. On to the updates…
Basketball
Thursday offered UNC fans a great opportunity to go behind the scenes with Carolina Basketball, as the Tar Heels held an open practice at the Smith Center. R.L. Bynum from Tar Heel Tribune was on hand to capture a large portion of the practice session in the video below.
Prior to the practice, fans also got to hear from five-star freshman forward Caleb Wilson, who spoke with the media about the Tar Heels’ team chemistry, his passing ability and decision-making, positionless basketball, confidence, work ethic, and more.
Former UNC forward Justin Pierce may have retired from playing professional basketball overseas, but he’s still competing internationally and won MVP over the weekend at the FIBA 3x3 event for Team London in Deqing, China.
And former UNC “Blue Steel” guard Jackson Watkins completed his second marathon, running a personal best time of 3:53:09 at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday morning.
Football
Although there was no Tar Heel football this weekend, it wasn’t without a few storylines.
Senior running back Caleb Hood announced that he is calling it a career. Hood began the season as UNC’s starting running back and scored the Tar Heels’ first touchdown on the opening drive of the season, but has played sparingly since.
Next Saturday, UNC Football heads west to face the Cal Bears for a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Get your nap and some coffee. Hopefully, Bill Belichick and staff implemented some changes during the open week to help turn this season around.
And the following weekend on Oct. 25, Carolina hosts Virginia (game time TBD), and the band Collective Soul will headline the pregame festivities for a concert in Polk Place two hours before kickoff.

In the NFL, Drake Maye continues to post incredible numbers:
“In the Patriots’ 25–19 victory at New Orleans on Sunday, Maye consistently made throws in rhythm and threw into tight windows, going 18 of 26 for 261 yards and three touchdowns with a 140.1 passer rating.”
Former Tar Heel wide receiver Josh Downs caught his first touchdown reception of the season in the Colts’ 31-17 win over the Cardinals. Here’s the complete rundown of Tar Heels in the NFL this week.
