🏀 Basketball, Recruiting & Transfer Portal

UNC Basketball’s wild offseason ride continues as the Tar Heels continue to assemble their coaching staff, recruit the transfer portal, and say goodbye to some familiar faces.

Coaching Staff

Former Providence head coach Kim English had just joined Michael Malone’s staff after three seasons with the Friars in which his teams posted a 48-52 record (23-37 Big East). However, on Sunday Pete Thamel reported that English “informed UNC officials that he’s decided not to pursue an assistant coach position at North Carolina.“ No reason has been made public, but Kim didn’t just decide “not to pursue” the job. He was already in Chapel Hill working 🤔

That leaves new associate head coach Chuck Martin, Sean May, Pat Sullivan, and Eric Hoots on the Tar Heels’ staff with two assistant coaching spots left to fill.

Who’s in?

Former Virginia Tech guard Neoklis Avdalas is Malone’s first transfer portal commitment. Avdalas will arrive in Chapel Hill with three seasons of eligibility remaining. At 6-foot-9, the Kalamata, Greece native has the size and skills to play multiple positions and should make a big impact.

Avdalas joins returning players Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young, and Isaiah Denis, who all announced their intentions to remain with the Tar Heels over the past week, as well as incoming freshman Malloy Smith (son of Kenny Smith), who officially signed with UNC on Wednesday.
