UNC Football Hosts Richmond, Volleyball's Perfect Start, 3 Baseball Commits, Hubert Davis on the Recruiting Trail
Plus: ACC basketball schedule, meet Kyan and Henri, 2 basketball recruits off the board, 3 swimmers make Team USA
It’s been another busy week in UNC sports. UNC Football hosts Richmond on Saturday, Volleyball is off to a perfect 5-0 start after sweeping No. 11 Florida, the Diamond Heels landed three big baseball commitments, Hubert Davis is out on the recruiting trail, we met Kyan Evans and Henri Veesaar, the ACC basketball schedule is out, and more. On to the updates…
Football
After downing Charlotte on Saturday for UNC’s first win in the Bill Belichick era, the Tar Heels’ head coach spoke with the media on Tuesday about this weekend’s game against the Richmond Spiders in Chapel Hill (3:30, ACC Network).
And although Carolina got its first win, the offense is going to need to improve:
“Combining for 34 points against TCU and Charlotte, UNC has started a season with its fewest points in the first two games since scoring 26 points to start 2006. That team, John Bunting’s final squad in Chapel Hill, finished with a 3-9 record.“
On a more positive note, the defense played much better, only allowing 3 points to the 49ers despite the absence of top pass rusher Pryce Yates, who continues to recover from injury.
And since injuries are a given during any football season, UNC is building depth by utilizing “basic periods,” or short scrimmages on Sunday, to develop younger players who aren’t quite ready for game action. Carolina did this some during the Mack Brown 1.0 days in the ‘90s for redshirts and walk-ons to scrimmage after practice on Thursdays.
Speaking of talent development, I wonder if anyone besides young Javonte Williams believed he’d be wearing a real Dallas Cowboys uniform a decade later:
Football Recruiting
It was a quiet few days on the football recruiting trail, but UNC quarterback commit Travis Burgess had surgery to repair his injured knee and will now begin the rehab process to prepare for next season in Chapel Hill.
Basketball
On the hardwood, North Carolina’s ACC Basketball schedule was released this week. The Tar Heels only play NC State once but will play Duke and Syracuse twice. Here’s the complete 2025-26 UNC Basketball schedule if you’d like to check it out.
Colorado State transfer point guard Kyan Evans and Arizona transfer center Henri Veesaar were introduced to the Tar Heel faithful on Wednesday. Here are their video interviews. Former UNC guard Caleb Love was instrumental in steering Veesaar to UNC.
Former UNC guard Cormac Ryan signed with the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday after a strong NBA Summer League showing:
And Former UNC forward and Charlotte, NC native Duwe Farris just completed 8 months in Kigali, Rwanda as part of the NGO “Shooting Touch,” which uses the “mobilizing power of sport to bridge health and opportunity gaps for youth and women.”
I’m a sucker for travel photos, where-are-they-now stories, and charitable acts, and Farris’ story has all three, so I’m linking to the Instagram photos below.
Basketball Recruiting
Despite pre-season practices being in full swing, Hubert Davis has been busy on the recruiting trail. On Wednesday morning, Davis dropped in to visit class of 2027 5-star shooting guard Jordan Page at Broughton high school, per Dushawn London of 247Sports.
